An Actress Who Really Shouldn't Have Shared An Anecdote About Denzel Washington, And More Of This Week's 'One Main Character'
Every day somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on Twitter from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.
This week's characters include a Congresswoman with a joke that made everyone's head hurt, a TV reporter fear-mongering about people giving trick-or-treaters weed-laced candy, a woman who got people riled up over the value of various degrees and an actress who got mad at an iconic actor for just doing his job.
Monday
Congresswoman Lauren Boebert
The character: Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, Republican representative from Colorado, woman who attempted to "Imeach Biden," not an epidemiologist.
The plot: On Monday, Boebert made an analogy comparing COVID-19 vaccinations to taking Tylenol in a tweet that included a GIF from the movie "Office Space."
"I woke up with a headache this morning. I took some Tylenol. Now if everyone else could take some Tylenol too so mine would start working, that would be great," Boebert quipped.
The repercussion: Boebert's tweet implicitly comparing headaches to the coronavirus went viral, making Tylenol a trending topic as the Republican got taken to task for her head-scratching joke. Some people called out the Congresswoman's tweet for appearing to lack awareness of basic science about modern medicine at a time when health experts have repeatedly explained that herd immunity through vaccination could help end the pandemic but people's reticence to getting vaxxed is prolonging it.
However, the deepest cut came from "Office Space" actor Diedrich Bader, who politely requested the Congresswoman refrain from using GIFs from his movie.
Tuesday
Jaclyn Lee
The character: Jaclyn Lee, 6abc Philadelphia, world's worst narc.
The plot: On Tuesday, Lee teased an upcoming report warning parents to look closely at their children's Halloween candy, based on a communiqué from the Bensalem Police Department. "BEWARE: As Halloween gets closer, @BensalemPolice are warning parents to LOOK at your child's candy before they eat it," she wrote. "They confiscated these snacks that look a lot like the real thing. All are laced with THC."
The repercussion: Lee's tweet warning of people handing children candy "laced with THC" was widely mocked by the internet as a kind of "reefer madness" redux. Others questioned the likelihood of adults giving away expensive recreational drugs to children.
Wednesday
@tbamz97
The character: Tami AKA @tbamz97, a 24-year-old Brit, not a fan of the arts.
The plot: On Wednesday, @tbamz97 fired a shot in the degree wars, tweeting, "There is a hierarchy in the value of degrees imo. No one can tell me dance or business is an important as medicine, there's no way."
The repercussion: @tbamz got buried in an avalanche of quote-tweets, roasted by numerous netizens who called her argument elitist and countered that the arts made life worth living.
Thursday
Ellen Pompeo
The character: Ellen Pompeo, star of "Grey's Anatomy," Teen Choice Award nominee.
The plot: On Thursday, it was revealed that in an episode of Pompeo's podcast, the actress voluntarily disclosed an on-the-set blowup she had with Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington, who was guest-directing a 2016 episode.
She explained that executive producer Debbie Allen had retained the legendary actor to keep her on the show. While being directed by Washington, Pompeo said she coached an actor who was apologizing to her character (Dr. Meredith Grey) for assaulting her to look her in her eyes. This prompted Washington to tell Pompeo, "I'm the director. Don't you tell him what to do."
"Listen, motherf***er, this is my show!" Pompeo said she told the Oscar winner. "This is my set. Who are you telling? Like, you barely know where the bathroom is. And I have the utmost respect for him as an actor, as a director, as everything, but, like, yo, we went at it one day." She also said she confronted Washington's wife about the incident.
The repercussion: Pompeo's anecdote did not endear her to the internet, who proceeded to excoriate her and question why she would voluntarily share, in enthusiastic fashion, this simultaneously unflattering and unprofessional story about disrespecting Denzel Washington.
