Over the past three years, Huawei strengthen its Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) for phones and the company has moved with non Google apps.

In 2019, Huawei was banned by the U.S. and the company had to give up on Google Mobile Services and apps for its new phones. Since then, Huawei has released a variety of new phones all of them running without Google apps.

This year is no different and Huawei launched a variety of new phones including the Mate 50 Pro, Nova 10 series, and more. These phones pack solely the HMS ecosystem. Also powered by the latest EMUI 12 and EMUI 13.

Despite of lacking Google, Huawei has focused on smartphone technologies and fed EMUI with new features. For example, EMUI is better than ever, the EMUI 12 and EMUI 13 come with a brand new user interface.

There are new additions including smart folders, service widgets, better screen content management, optimized performance, and a variety of new security features for a safer user experience.

The app ecosystem matters, that’s why Huawei is expanding collaborations with popular app developers. The company is offering incentives and developer programs to support AppGallery to compete against the Play Store.

Aside from software, Huawei is one of the top smartphone makers. Despite facing many issues in the supply chain, Huawei kept on using the latest hardware in smartphones.

The new Huawei Mate 50 Pro is a prime example, as it packs a brand XMAGE new camera system and a powerful lens to take high-quality pictures.

On the other hand, Huawei is providing better design and high build quality, which is recognizable as the top trend in the smartphone industry. These traits add a different level of expertise to Huawei’s portfolio and the tech maker has maintained them throughout 2022.

Google Play Store has been causing some unlawful trouble for Android users in the US. As per the input revealings, the company is alleged by the California lawsuits of preserving forbidden Play Store rules and disobeying US anti-competition laws.

The story begins in July this year. The major authorities of 36 states sued the US tech maker. Accordingly, the authorities claimed that Google puts pressure on the developers for opting the Play Store practices irrespective of their convenience.

In addition, many app developers reported that Google forces them to use the Play Store in-app purchase system which cost 30% commission. Consequently, these steps keep Google far away from the market competition.

Thus, Google alleged for following illegal marketing concepts and creating trouble for Android users with Play Store rules. In the latest edition, the California lawsuits have proceeded with this matter as a consumer class action of 21 million individuals.

For your information, a class action is a type of regulation where a large number of people takes legal action against the same problem. Here, the class action consists of Android users of 12 US states including Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Eventually, this class action sought out damage of 4.7 billion USD. Meanwhile, California judge James Donato said in an order [PDF] that the company has halted the legal common practices for the tech makers in the market which leads to anti-competitive business.

Google denies the allegations

Significantly, Google kept its points in front of the lawmen and denied the allegations. The company said that they are working under legal rules and regulations without harming users’ concerns.

“We’re evaluating the ruling and after that, we’ll assess our options.”

It’s worth mentioning that Google has rolled out the user billing system to comfort developers worldwide. With this feature, developers can utilize their own in-app purchase system without making a share in the Play Store. However, the respective feature has still some time to come into effective usage.

AppBrain market research organization has recently released the November 2022 global Android market details. As per the report, Huawei is standing as the fifth Android smartphone maker in the world.

Huawei and its U.S. conflict stories are well-known in the market. The tough restrictions have made the company suffer a lot in industrial and economical growth. To some extent, the problems are still emerging on the board.

Even so, the company continued to place new achievements on its shelves and remains one of the largest Android smartphone makers. The latest report states that Huawei has successfully secured the fifth rank in the Android smartphone maker list of the world.

According to the information, Huawei has attained a market share of 6.7 percent. While the company has managed to obtain a good place, Samsung is the lead player and won the first position with 34.6% of the market share.

On the other hand, Xiaomi stands on the second platform with a 14.3% market share. Thereafter, OPPO and Vivo follow the list with a market share of 10.3% and 9.8% respectively.

In addition to the rankings, the report also highlights the Samsung Galaxy A12 as the most demandable smartphone among global users.

Huawei – the world’s second Android smartphone maker

Yes, you read that right. Huawei has achieved the world’s second Android manufacturer award in 2019. Unfortunately, the same year has given rise to the U.S. blockage for the company which turned all the effort into vain.

Thereafter, tech makers like Samsung and Xiaomi have started surpassing Huawei with Google Mobile Services and other facilities. As a result, the company shares gradually started declining in the phone merchandise.

Anyhow, Huawei is getting back on track with its impressive and innovative technologies. On the sideways, the company is also working on its operating systems and claims to bring some enormous changes in the time ahead.

Huawei and its phones have survived a long journey without Google Mobile Services. However, we cannot deny the fact, that it was quite tough for the company to face this challenge and make space in this Google and Android running world.

We are well aware of the services and benefits that Google provides to its Android users. So far, Huawei has also remained in this beneficial group in the initial days. Unfortunately, these benefits come to a shutdown in May 2019.

The Google absence story begins with the U.S. emperors who prohibited Huawei and some other Chinese manufacturers to enter the U.S. borders. Ultimately, this step has become a huge obstacle for the tech maker and has affected various fields including the chipset market.

Alongside the tech segments, the event also made Google pull its hands from Huawei sectors. As a result, after 2019, none of the Huawei devices exhibited any Google apps or services.

Although, some users were having vast technical knowledge and tried installing the Google apps and mobile services to their Huawei phones. Yet, Google has blocked such inappropriate pathways with the subsequent updates.

New leaps – HarmonyOS and AppGallery

The absence of Google Mobile Services means losing some prominent apps from your smartphone. For instance, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, and most importantly – the Play Store. Hence, the absence of Google gave a loud blow to Huawei.

Consequently, the company started drowning in the smartphone market. The sales dropped extremely and users’ interest in Huawei phones started fading. But the company didn’t give up and made a leap on the surface with the HarmonyOS system.

After several efforts, Huawei launched the self-developed HarmonyOS operating system in August 2019. Originally, it was only covering IoT (Internet of Things) devices. Later on, it started making its way to Huawei smartphones.

More on this, the company introduced AppGallery, which became a safer alternative to Google Play Store. Although it has fewer apps than Play Store, some other AppGallery facilities excel from other app distribution platforms.

Huawei phones Google Mobile Services

Thereafter, Huawei also introduced the EMUI operating system for its global users. Notably, EMUI is an Android-derived mobile operating system that is available in Huawei smartphones for the global market.

Huawei still trying to cope with the world

Even though numerous things were against Huawei, it managed and still trying to survive without Google. The latest and high-end technologies show how the company has taken Google’s absence as a challenge and come up with good enough outcomes.

However, difficulties continue to emerge in Huawei’s path. Though the decline has been slowed down, it has not halted, and the loss continues.

But the appreciating fact is Huawei well-managed and appeared as a strong contender in front of the robust challenges. If there was any other company in place of Huawei, it would have been turned into ashes. But this tech giant is quite headstrong to get defeated.

So yes, Huawei has survived a world without Google. The company has proven that it is capable of building up new and advanced solutions. But, it still has to work to gain back its fandom in the smartphone and chipset market.

Moreover, it would be worth seeing whether Google Mobile Services will take a U-turn for Huawei. Or will the company have to make new initiations for taking its place back in the market?

Once again, Android 13 Beta is spotted on the bugs and issues list. A user recently reported that some of its favorite shortcut and notification features are missing after upgrading to the latest Android 13 beta firmware.

Shortcut features perform some specific actions in the devices. These features reside either in the supported launcher or the virtual assistant. Besides, it helps users quickly initiate common actions on their phones.

As per the details, the Pixel 7 Pro user enrolled in the latest beta rollout. After the Android 13 beta installation, the user didn’t find the drop-down shortcut features (used to identify a song playing) on his smartphone.

The user further mentions that this feature was one of the most effective and thoughtful shortcuts on his device. On the other hand, the respective element was much quicker than commanding the Google Assistant for a similar task.

Interestingly, the user has compared the beta results between his Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro devices. He said that though the feature is missing from the Pixel 7 Pro smartphone, it was available when updated Pixel 6 Pro to the latest beta iteration.

An issue with the call display

In continuation, the user also mentioned that there is some issue with the call display as well. So far, the ongoing calls used to appear in a pill-like shape at the top-left corner (beside the clock icon). However, after the upgrade, the pill shape has converted into a bubble.

Again, things were good with the Pixel 6 Pro smartphone. Yet the beta has resulted in some terrible changes on the Pixel 7 Pro handset.

On the flip side, another user reported the quick setting tile issue. Accordingly, the issue has bumped into the Wi-Fi toggle, and turning it on and off has become such an irritating task.

Android 13 beta shortcut features

Suggested Solution:

Many users appeared with some solutions for the respective shortcut issue. An individual asked to check the respective shortcut feature in the Settings menu:

  • Go to the Settings app
  • Tap on the Search bar
  • Search “Now Playing”

Although, this didn’t help the user much. According to the inputs, he didn’t find anything relevant that can add the drop-down shortcut button back on the notification shade.

Why only Pixel 7 devices?

As mentioned, the issues are only appearing when upgrading the Pixel 7 Pro device to the latest firmware. Meanwhile, things are quite good with the Pixel 6 Pro gadget. This is more surprising in comparison to the issues arising in the phone.

Even in recent times, we came across several issues that are particularly affecting the Pixel 7 series in some or the other way. For instance, the Vo5G issue has disappeared unknowingly from many Pixel 7 devices.

So what does that mean? Is the Pixel 7 series not compatible with the Android 13 system? Well, we need a more clear view of these statements.

As per the tweaks, Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3.1 could be the last beta rollout. Thereafter, the company will push off the stable build. Perhaps, we could find one more beta iteration by the end of this month with some new and major fixes.

Since the latest beta holds several issues, one more improvement rollout is required so that users could get rid of the bugs and defects that are taking place at the moment.

A few days ago, Google rolled out Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3.1 for beta testers, and some users reported losing Vo5G on some Google Pixel 7 smartphones. Google is rolling out the Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3.1 patch (T1B3.221003.008) for Pixel 4a, 5, 5a, 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, and 7 Pro series devices.

Vo5G:

Vo5G is similar to the voice in today’s 4G networks. In 4G LTE, voice calls are implemented as end-to-end Voice over IP (VoIP) connections managed by an IMS core. Voice and video communication services in these networks ride on top of the IP data connection. When the call happens over LTE, it is called Voice over LTE (VoLTE), and when it is over Wi-Fi, it is known as Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi).

Issue:

A Pixel 7 user on Reddit wrote: “Just noticed that it’s gone now, was there in beta 3.0 – anyone else?” Another user in the comment replied with a solution that the Android 13 QPR1 beta 3.1 Vo5G issue may require it to re-enable manually.

However, a user revealed that the option is gone and there’s no way to get it back. On the other hand, a user shared instructions to get this option back on phone (here’s the link)

Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3.1 is available to download for the existing beta build. As it may take up to 24 hours to receive the OTA update on your device. You can check for updates by going to Settings > System > System updates.

Below you can check all of the Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3.1 release notes:

  • Fixed issues where a device’s GPU drivers sometimes caused the system UI to freeze during normal device use.
  • Fixed an issue where Pixel phones sometimes displayed an incorrect “Missed call” notification instead of “Call answered on another device” when the call was answered remotely by Pixel Watch (in untethered mode).
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the Google Camera app to crash.

  • Fixed that issue that prevented the “Go to browser” option in the notification shade from working while using an instant app.
