5G phone market decline, Huawei said 4G is more mature

China is the fastest country to rollout 5G. But now, the 5G phone market is facing a sharp decline. China Academy of Information and Communications Technology published a report about the smartphone market in November 2022.

This report covers the market statics from January to November 2022. According to the information, the total shipments of phones in the Chinese market reached 244 million units, a year-on-year decline of 23.2%.

Among them, 5G mobile phone shipments were 191 million units, a year-on-year market decline of 20.2%. The total 5G accounted for 78.3% of mobile phone shipments in the same period.

From January to November 2022, there was a total of 381 new models released. It is a year-on-year decline of 10.8%, of which, 202 are 5G phones and it’s also a year-on-year decline of 0.5%, accounting for 53.0% of the number of new models of mobile phones on the market during the last year.

Looking at the domestic and overseas companies’ composition. From January to November 2022, Chinese brand shipments equaled 207 million units, a year-on-year decline of 24.9%, accounting for 84.8% of mobile phone shipments during the same period.

On the other hand, domestic players launched a total of 346 new models, a year-on-year decline of 10.8% %, accounting for 90.8% of the number of new models of mobile phones launched in the same period.

5G is not the first choice:

4G is a more mature and easily available network as 5G is still under development for a wide and stable availability. More people are considering buying Huawei Mate 50 series because of its features and they’re unbothered by 4G access.

To be mentioned, Huawei staff in stores are providing demos for customers with a live comparison between current 5G and 4G network speed to showcase that Huawei provides better and more stable network performance even without a 5g chipset.

Huawei is currently launching 4G phones due to the lack of important components but the company is still giving a tough competition to 5G enabled phone with latest WiFi and network technologies.

Xiaomi took 50 million Huawei smartphone users: President

After the events of the U.S. ban, Huawei had to reduce its capacity of building new smartphones, which result in low yield and sales, and now, Xiaomi claims that it took over 50 million of Huawei’s users.

During the Xiaomi Investment Day, Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi Group said that Huawei has lost over 80 million smartphone users, of which, Xiaomi took over 50 million.

This is quite a big statement made by the head of the Chinese phone maker as Huawei was forced to leave the market due to the restrictions on manufacturing.

After not meeting the market requirements the share of Huawei’s smartphone market declined severely in both the Chinese and global markets. While other smartphone makers are the ones that got most of the benefits.

Xiaomi and Huawei

From the rest, Apple took over 20 million users and Honor grabbed 10 million, which accounts for an overall 80 million Huawei users.

According to the data revealed by Canalys, the global smartphone market ranked Samsung first and Apple second, which has increased by 22 percent and 19 percent respectively. While Xiaomi declined to 13 percent.

Aside from Apple and Samsung, other smartphone maker has declined. On this matter, Xiaomi’s president said that the decline in his firm is related to various reasons such as currency depreciation, chips from shortage to surplus, and intensified competition, the global mobile phone market will decline by 12% in 2022, of which the Chinese market will decline by 13%.

Why not?

It was an opportunity for all of the smartphone companies with an open opportunity to grab Huawei’s market share and it fell directly into their lap without doing anything.
