Android 14 is the next software version for the Android ecosystem. On February 8, Google stepped ahead to begin the development of this major upgrade with the first developer beta.

Google has released the roadmap for the development, beta testing, platform stability, and the final release of Android 14, which reveals meet the launch of Huawei HarmonyOS 4 later in the second half of 2023.

The first developer preview is already out for the Pixel devices. However, Google could open early access to other smartphone makers such as OnePlus by April when the open beta campaign kicks off.

As mentioned by the Android company, Android 14 is projected to reach platform stability by the end of July. But there’s still a possibility of these milestone timelines to delay, similar to last year.

Android 14 development milestone

For your information, the Android 14 developer preview will be a very useful and early gift to the developer community. It will pave a way for the app devs to know more about the upcoming APIs and app features ahead of the final launch.

Looking into the developer preview features, Android 14 promises to improve productivity, enhances performance, improvements to security, and privacy, and bring new customizations.

Yes, there are new tweaks and changes made over Android 12, while there are more that will be visible as the development progress further. Throughout this phase, these developers (and later users) will help to fix bugs and make improvements to the Android 14 source code.

HarmonyOS 4:

Aside from the Android 14 developer beta, Huawei is preparing for the HarmonyOS 3.1 rollout but the company is working on HarmonyOS 4 as a major release for the next generation of Huawei devices. For now, there’s no official launch date available but we are likely to hear more on this at the Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) 2023 event.

HarmonyOS 4 promises big upgrades over HarmonyOS 3 and a major restructure in the user interface (UI). Nonetheless, we’ll keep you posted.

The U.S. wants to impose further restrictions on Huawei to completely cut off the supply chains including the goods from Qualcomm and Intel. We could just call it the latest addition to the U.S. administration’s obsession with Huawei.

Reuters reports that the U.S. Government under Joe Biden has come up with a new policy of denial to sell items to Huawei. The list of denial now goes beyond 5G to cover products for 4G, WiFi 6, WiFi 7, A.I., and high-performance cloud computing and cloud items.

A person familiar with the matter revealed that the Biden administration wants to tighten its grip on Huawei and the reversing the approval of 4G chip technology transfer. However, these chips were also approved under the early office of Biden himself.

Back in 2019, the former U.S. president ordered to put Huawei into the so-called Entity List, which bans other companies from selling their goods to Huawei. This led to massive outages in Huawei’s supply chain, as the intent was to empty Huawei from all of its tech access.

So, It lost Google mobile services, 5G chipset, and other crucial components used in telecom products. These sanctions didn’t have effect immediately but the U.S. government staged them to check the impact on the Chinese tech maker.

Qualcomm and intel are one of these companies that were approved to ship their chip to Huawei. Thereafter, Huawei continues to use Qualcomm chips in its all products whether its flagship, mid-range, or tablet device. Therefore, the U.S. likely come upfront to cut Qualcomm and Intel from Huawei.

For the time being, reports are colliding that the latest decision has been made, while a few suggest that the decision is under discussion. Either way, it’s a decision made by a government sitting in a fantasy land and licking a fantasy popsicle.

Huawei Fantasy?

Why not? The U.S. banned Huawei out of nowhere, and the U.S. government puts a ban on Huawei every year to showcase in the name of protecting U.S. citizens, while it’s just a matter of some headlines that come after such a step.

The U.S. administration thinks that attacking Huawei means attacking China, while the U.S. continues to ship a large number of technologies to many big Chinese smartphone makers. Would, the U.S. also consider cutting ties with them as well, it won’t be a matter of national security.

Truth be told, Huawei is the only company that dominated both the network and smartphone market, and there’s an old saying “When you can’t beat the odds change the game”. Odds have always been in favor of Huawei but the U.S. is continuously changing the game since 2019. But the question is, for how long?

2023 brought in new opportunities for Huawei and the tech make is preparing to bring in a surprise in the chipset category, suggesting a well-known Huawei tipster, which seems really exciting.

Classmateguan said that Huawei will work hard to forge ahead in 2023 and the company will craft technologies to resolve issues. However, the company could also bring some small surprises in the chipset, which remains confidential from Huawei.

The tipster hints that the surprise could drop in the second half of this year and it is likely to be a good sign for the Chinese semiconductor industry. To be mentioned, there’s no specific signal about Kirin or HiSilicon. But we can expect a large number of votes going in favor of Huawei SoC.

Huawei chipset small surprise

Chipset Manufacturing Equipment Ban:

According to a Bloomberg report, the U.S. has secured a deal with Netherlands and Japan to tighten access of chipset manufacturing technologies for China. This new move is designed to limit China’s ability to come up with a breakthrough in chip production technology.

Amid this situation, firms such as Huawei are an example of U.S. chip control restrictions and the extent that the U.S. has gone to control Chinese tech makers’ progress in the global telecom market.

Since 2019, the U.S. is continuously imposing restrictions on Huawei. Thereafter, Huawei lost access to Google Mobile Services (GMS) and the ability to print new Kirin chips via Taiwan’s TSMC.

The result of these actions caused a major drop in Huawei smartphone sales and the firm had to announce the ending of Kirin. Thus relying on Qualcomm is the sole option for the company and since 2021, Huawei is using Snapdragon semiconductors for all of its new devices.

Surprise:

It’s good to see what continues to rumble into the world of Huawei and we are eager to know what kind of chipset surprise the company has prepared for us.

Over the past years, Google has gained immense power in the tech industry and now it has been sued by the US Department of Justice over an alleged monopoly control over the advertisement market.

According to the information, the antitrust lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice on Google claims that the search giant has monopolized the digital ad market.

The DOJ is joined by 8 U.S. states in the lawsuit including New York, California, and Colorado. These states blame Google for curbing digital competitiveness and curbing other businesses.

“Google has corrupted legitimate competition in the ad tech industry by engaging in a systematic campaign to seize control of the wide swath of high-tech tools used by publishers, advertisers, and brokers to facilitate digital advertising.” says the lawsuit.

While being filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the lawsuit wants to force Google to see much of its suit of ad technology products, which includes software for buying and selling ads.

DOJ described Google’s behavior on this matter.

“Google’s plan has been simple but effective: (1) neutralize or eliminate ad tech competitors, actual or potential, through a series of acquisitions; and (2) wield its dominance across digital advertising markets to force more publishers and advertisers to use its products while disrupting their ability to use competing products effectively.

Each time a threat has emerged, Google has used its market power in one or more of these ad tech tools to quash the threat. The result: Google’s plan for durable, industry-wide dominance has succeeded.”

Google:

Despite being sued by U.S. DOJ, Google rephrased that the digital advertisement market is healthy and competitive, citing strong competitors such as Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft.

Google has published an official answer to this lawsuit saying “DOJ is doubling down on a flawed argument that would slow innovation, raise advertising fees and make it harder for thousands of small businesses and publishers to grow.”

Google also pinpointed that the government should not pick between winners and losers in a competitive industry, which makes sense in the right way. However, Google also said that such a lawsuit will be a drawback for its advertisement technology designed for the advertisement industry.

“Threaten the free and fair markets upon which our economy is based. We will aggressively protect consumers, safeguard competition and work to ensure economic fairness and opportunity for all.” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said monopolies.

Despite a long-standing issue with its changelog, Google keeps on sending new and multiple Play Store versions to Android users including the 34.0.13, which recently began to release.

Google Play Store 34.0.13 is currently in the expansion stage for Android devices and it may take some to reach all of the users.

Purchase approval:

Earlier this week, Google added a new parent control feature to Play Store that will allow parents to add purchase approval for their children.

According to the information, the feature will allow children to send a purchase request for the family manager account to approve it. Similar to app notification and the parent could then choose whether to approve it or not.

The approval covers paid apps and in-app purchases. Once received, the family manager could tap on the notification to process the payment request. The payment could be made through on-screen payment options as well as Google Play gift cards. In addition, you can check all of the histories in the section.

Real users and bots:

There is input that Google is working on a new way for developers to provide important information to users to detect whether it is run by a bot or a human.

Mishaal Rahman said that Google Play will execute this task by releasing a signal that helps to detect between “likely genuine” and likely non-genuine” traffic based on the presence and volume of Google Play Store activity.

We can simply call it an automated AI based approach to detect activity based on the usage data of a regular Play Store user. However, there’s no official information available from Google on this matter.

Changelog:

There was a change that recently appeared on the Play Store web version, such as the disappearance of the changelog of listed apps.

However, the changelogs are back in their place, as if they were never removed.

The U.S. sanctions cost Huawei a big smartphone market and Samsung is only favored by the situation to top the market, as there’s no fight left against this South Korean company from other players.

Up until 2019, Huawei was at its peak performance in the global smartphone business industry. The company kept on touching double-digit growth, while Samsung struggled to save its top spot.

According to IDC, Huawei’s market share in Q1 2019 was 19% with a 50.3% year-over-year increase in shipments. It had only an 11.8% market share in the Q1 of 2018. On the other hand, Samsung had a 23.1% share with an 8.1% decline in the same quarter at 23.5% in Q1 2018.

Ban:

In May 2019, Huawei was restricted by the U.S. commerce department. Afterward, the Chinese tech maker was prohibited from accessing many U.S.-originated components and software services.

These include mobile chipsets as well as networking technologies. That’s not it, Google also stopped certifying new Huawei smartphones.

This was one of the biggest moves against Huawei from the U.S. government to settle the score over the intensified trade war with China. Here, Huawei was executed with unproven accusations.

These situations began to affect Huawei severely its roots and completely disturbed its supply chain. As it can’t import, the required materials to build new smartphones and compete with the likes of Samsung.

The effect of the U.S. ban was gradual and Huawei’s decline had just begun.

Samsung vs Huawei for 1st place:

Despite this massive problem, Huawei surpassed Samsung for the first time and became the sole company to achieve this milestone by ending its last 9 years of continues streak.

According to Q2 2020 market report from Canalys, Huawei shipped more smartphones worldwide than any other company. Huawei shipped 55.8 million devices, down 5% year on year. But second-placed Samsung shipped 53.7 million smartphones a decline of 30% as compared to Q2 2019.

Q2 2020 top smartphone

Even with this achievement, Huawei’s massive decline had been initiated. Thereafter, Huawei, from 2020 to 2022, dropped from the top to the others category in quarterly shipments.

Samsung dominance:

IDC reports, in Q3 2022, Samsung acquired a 21.2% market share for the top spot. Followed by Apple with a 17.2% share and Xiaomi in third with 13.4%. While Huawei is nowhere for the time being.

smartphone shipment Q3 2022 IDC

No Progress:

Huawei showed that Samsung is beatable but this South Korean company is indirectly favored by the U.S. sanctions, so it could thank the Trump era for this massive move. Also, even after three years, Samsung is only saving its face because there’s no one there to challenge its prowess in the smartphone industry.

But it’s temporary because Samsung is just enjoying this no-competition zone and repeating Apple’s move, followed by Android’s gift cards. This firm is not doing anything new whatsoever and will be challenged once again sooner or later.

We’re about to complete 2022 and it was a tough year for Huawei but it was also an important one for the Chinese smartphone maker in every aspect whatsoever.

This year, Huawei skipped the Huawei P60 series launch event, which used to happen in the first quarter. However, the issues were related to a scrambled supply chain. After the events of the 2019 U.S. blacklisting, Huawei was under tight scrutiny and facing severe challenges in the supply chain.

Hence, components such as smartphone chipsets became hard to organize for new Huawei devices. In 2022, Huawei readjusted around the current business with Qualcomm and used 4G chips in the latest smartphones.

Since Huawei can no longer print HiSilicon chipsets via chipmakers such as TSMC, the company is relying more on Qualcomm and less on Kirin. The beginning was difficult but Huawei later assured sufficient Snapdragon supplies.

GMS:

Google Mobile Services and Play Store have been a big matter of concern for new smartphone buyers. This year, most consumers knew that Huawei phones no longer support Google apps. On the other hand, customers could now easily determine whether to buy a Huawei phone without any confusion.

EMUI and HarmonyOS:

2022 has proven to be a major year in EMUI and HarmonyOS software rollout history and it brings you the latest features. However, the latest version is yet to rollout for old phones.

Smartwatch and wearables:

Other than smartphones, Huawei is focusing on all of the smart consumer platforms such as tablets, smartwatches, and earbuds. The company continues to innovate for a better user experience and launch new products.

Signs of return:

Progress leads toward a positive state and the progress made over the past year is crucial from all angles. To understand, Huawei is gradually returning shipment records in the Chinese market. A place, where Huawei ruled supreme before the U.S. ban.

2022 was a tough year, the move in market share is gradual but the positive numbers for Huawei are encouraging and it laid out a good foundation for 2023.

Over the past three years, Huawei strengthen its Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) for phones and the company has moved with non Google apps.

In 2019, Huawei was banned by the U.S. and the company had to give up on Google Mobile Services and apps for its new phones. Since then, Huawei has released a variety of new phones all of them running without Google apps.

This year is no different and Huawei launched a variety of new phones including the Mate 50 Pro, Nova 10 series, and more. These phones pack solely the HMS ecosystem. Also powered by the latest EMUI 12 and EMUI 13.

Despite of lacking Google, Huawei has focused on smartphone technologies and fed EMUI with new features. For example, EMUI is better than ever, the EMUI 12 and EMUI 13 come with a brand new user interface.

huawei phone

There are new additions including smart folders, service widgets, better screen content management, optimized performance, and a variety of new security features for a safer user experience.

The app ecosystem matters, that’s why Huawei is expanding collaborations with popular app developers. The company is offering incentives and developer programs to support AppGallery to compete against the Play Store.

Aside from software, Huawei is one of the top smartphone makers. Despite facing many issues in the supply chain, Huawei kept on using the latest hardware in smartphones.
